Cold Water Swimming Benefits: Why 14 Days Away Made Me Crave the Reset
Sarah RedmanShare
Fourteen days away from the water.
On paper, that doesn’t sound like much but in reality, it felt like a lifetime!
Lambing season arrived, as it always does with its own rhythm and demands. Life on the farm shifted overnight into something all-consuming with early starts, late-night checks by torchlight, days shaped entirely by the needs of the sheep.
It’s a season I genuinely love. There’s something incredibly grounding about it. New life. Fresh beginnings. The quiet satisfaction of hard work that truly matters.
But this year, I felt the absence of something else just as strongly.
The water.
For two full weeks, I didn’t dip once. No slipping into a loch. No quick river stop on the way past. No standing at the edge, breathing deeply, preparing for that first cold embrace.
And I missed it so much more than I expected.
Because cold water swimming, for me, isn’t just something I do. It’s how I take care of myself. It’s my reset. My space. My pause button in a world that rarely slows down.
When you step into cold water, everything else falls away. The noise. The to-do lists. The constant thinking.
It all disappears in that moment of cold shock and breath. Your body takes over, your mind quietens, and suddenly you’re completely present. Not thinking about what’s next. Not replaying what’s already happened. Just there. In the water. In nature.
And without it, I noticed the difference.
Even though I was outside all day, surrounded by fields and fresh air, I missed that deeper connection the water brings. I missed the stillness. The way the world softens when you’re floating, listening to birdsong carry across the surface.
I missed the ritual of it. The getting in, the getting out, the wrapping up warm, the hot tea afterwards and that deep, settled calm that follows.
There’s a clarity that comes after a cold dip that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.
Like your whole system has been reset. Stress softens. Your mood lifts. Everything feels just a little more manageable.
And without those moments, I could feel the build-up.
The busyness didn’t stop, if anything, lambing made life even fuller but there was no real pause within it. No moment that was just for me.
That’s the thing about cold water. It gives you space. Not hours and hours but just enough. Enough to breathe. Enough to think clearly. Enough to reconnect with yourself.
So yes, I missed it. Properly.
But now, May is here.
There’s a shift you can feel, not just in the air, but in myself too. The days are longer, the light lingers, and even though the water still holds that beautiful chill, it feels more inviting somehow. Like it’s been waiting.
And I can’t wait to get back to regular dipping again. To rebuild that routine. To step back into those moments of stillness. To reconnect—with the water, with nature, and with myself.
Because the benefits go far beyond the dip itself. Over time, you really start to feel the difference:
A natural, lasting boost in mood
Reduced stress and anxiety
Improved circulation and recovery
Better sleep
Increased resilience both physically and mentally
But beyond all of that, it gives you something simple and powerful: time.
Time away from everything else.
Time to just be.
Time to feel alive.
And if you’ve been thinking about trying it, there’s honestly no better time than now. You don’t need to be a strong swimmer. You don’t need to be fearless. You don’t even need to stay in for long. You just need to be curious enough to take that first step.
That’s exactly why I offer both 1–2–1 sessions and very small, supportive “Dip Your Toe In” group sessions throughout the summer. I know how intimidating it can feel at the start, and I’m here to guide you through it safely, gently, and at your own pace.
Whether you’re looking for a full reset, a new challenge, or simply a bit more time for yourself, you’ll find something in the water. I certainly did.
And after fourteen days away, I’m more grateful than ever for it.
So if you’re ready to feel that shift, that clarity, that calm, please get in touch and come and experience it for yourself.
Because sometimes, the smallest step into cold water can make the biggest difference.
