FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions – Swim the Lochs

Curious about wild swimming? Thinking about joining a session but not sure what to expect? You’re in the right place. Here are the questions I’m most often asked – with honest, friendly answers to help you feel prepared (and excited!) for your next swim adventure.

Before You Book

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
Nope! You don’t need to be an endurance athlete to enjoy wild swimming. Many of our swimmers are beginners who just want to dip their toes in safely. If you can swim a little and are comfortable in water, we’ll take it step by step together.

Is wild swimming safe?
Yes – when it’s done with care. Safety is at the heart of every session: I check the water, talk you through entry and exit points, and make sure you stay within your comfort zone.

Where do you swim?
Mostly in Dumfries & Galloway and South Ayrshire – think Stranraer, Portpatrick, Girvan, Maidens, Loch Trool, Loch Ken, and the Galloway Forest Park. We also head further afield for special adventures:

  • Ailsa Craig (the uninhabited island off Girvan) – a truly unique swim spot
  • Waterfall swims in hidden forest glens
  • Sauna and swim sessions for that perfect hot/cold contrast
  • And of course the infamous “dips and chips” – a sea swim followed by proper seaside chips in Girvan!

Finding Us

How do I know where to meet?
I share exact meeting points using the What3Words app. It divides the world into 3m squares and gives each one a unique three-word address – so even if the loch car park has no postcode, you’ll still find us with no stress.

What is What3Words?
It’s a free app (downloadable on iOS and Android) that makes navigation simple and super-accurate. Perfect for remote lochside car parks and tucked-away coastal coves.

What to Bring

What kit do I need?
The basics: swimsuit or wetsuit, towel, and warm clothes for afterwards. But a few extras make things safer and more fun:

  • Bright hat & tow float (for visibility)
  • Neoprene socks, dive boots or old trainers (to protect your feet)
  • Neoprene gloves in colder months
  • A big towel or dry robe
  • Cosy layers + a woolly hat
  • A flask of something hot and a snack (cake is a tradition!)

For a full list, read my blog: Essential Kit for Wild Swimming.

Where can I buy tow floats?
I recommend [trusted supplier name here] – and I have a discount code for Swim the Lochs swimmers. Just ask when you book, and you’ll save on your first tow float or swim cap.

Do I need a wetsuit?
Not always. Many people love “skins swimming” (just a swimsuit/trunks). Wetsuits are great if you’re new to cold water, want more buoyancy, or plan to swim longer.

During the Swim

How cold will it be?
This depends on the season – lochs can be chilly even in summer and bracing in winter. Don’t worry, we’ll always tailor swim time to your experience and the water temperature.

What if I panic in the water?
That’s completely normal. I’ll be right there beside you to encourage, reassure, and help you feel safe. Everyone has wobbles – it’s part of the journey.

Can I bring a friend or family member?
Absolutely – wild swimming is even better when shared. Just let me know in advance so I can plan accordingly.

After the Swim

How do I warm up?
Dry off straight away, pull on warm layers (don’t forget socks and gloves), and pop on a hat. Sip from your flask, nibble some cake, and bask in the afterglow – it’s all part of the ritual.

Do we really eat cake after swims?
Yes. Always. Cake (and sometimes chips) are essential fuel in the wild swimming world. The swim community is as much about friendship and post-swim snacks as it is about the water itself!

Is there anywhere nearby to stay?
Yes – you can even book into our family’s off-grid Airbnb, Creeside Escape, tucked away in the Galloway Forest Park. It’s the perfect base for a weekend of swimming, walking and stargazing.

Practicalities

What areas do you cover?
Mainly Dumfries & Galloway and South Ayrshire: from inland lochs like Trool and Ken to coastal spots near Girvan, Stranraer, Maidens and Portpatrick. I also run special day trips and seasonal adventures further afield.

How much does it cost?
1:1 sessions start from £40. Group swims vary depending on numbers and location. Special events (like Ailsa Craig trips or sauna/swim experiences) are priced individually.

How do I pay?
Payment is taken in advance by bank transfer or you can book on our events pages.

What if the weather is bad?
Safety first – always. If conditions aren’t safe, we’ll rearrange or switch to a safer location.
